As a board member of the City of Hailey’s Chamber of Commerce, I was recently invited to sit in on a presentation given by the City’ of Hailey’s Planning and Zoning commission about a new set of building ordinances that will be presented to the City Council later this year for their consideration and approval. Called Build Better, Build Smarter the proposed ordinances are the result of over 20 months of research into similar programs in other resort communities and progressive communities nation wide aimed at making the City of Hailey a leader in energy efficiency and green construction techniques.
Research included extensive conversation with local leadership and community leaders from all related sectors including building and construction professionals, architects and local environmental agencies. The program is geared toward raising the bar in efficiencies and green building techniques by exceeding the minimum building code requirements by at least 10% of what is required and providing for “above code” programs. Similar building programs are in place in progressive communities like Boulder, Aspen and Telluride Colorado and have proven very successful.
I believe this sort of program is warranted and offers long range benefits for everyone. The people behind Build Better, Build Smarter have done their homework and agree that taking steady and regular “baby steps” toward meeting and exceeding efficiencies in green construction will hep us keep pace as an environmentally aware leaders in smart and reasonable sustainability. Assuming the Hailey City Council approves the proposed new ordinances, the Build Better, Build Smarter program will go into effect January 1, 2011.
